A blog is just articles someone writes during the day telling what they are doing or what is going on in their world.
Business use them to keep their customers, visitors up todate on the business itself.

A blog is sort of an online diary, but blog format is also often used for news websites. Popular blogs can make money displaying advertising to their visitors through a program such as google adsense. There are many services available to create simple blogs for free, such as Blogger and Wordpress, but if you want something more advanced you can try installing something like Wordpress or Movable Type on your
own server and configuring it to your needs.

The other answers define a blog pretty well… but, three points:
1. A blog is essentially a self-ego trip, exposing your personal opinion to the rest of the world.
2. Unless you are a celebrity, blogs are poorly visited, usually only by familly and friends (Who cares about what YOU think, really?)
3. To "make money" from a blog, and through advertising, you need at least 10,000 unique visitors per month… an impossible task to 99.9% of bloggers.
So, don’t put your hopes too high…
Everyone, nowadays, wants to have his/her own blog!
This means we will soon have 6 BILLIONS new websites.
The only ones who WILL make money are the website hosting companies…
Get real! We already have 250 millions websites, out of which only 2% are "successful".

a blog is basically a thing people write in on the internet
businesses use them to keep people up to date on new things (like "version 6 is now available!!")
individual people can use them to write thoughts in (like a journal)
or to write about a specific subject (like "words I like" where they write one word each week)
some people make group blogs where they can all write about a specific subject (like "cool stuff we’ve spotted on World of Warcraft")
people make money from it either by making their blog about something they make (eg "new artwork i’ve created") and selling things with it (usually not very successful – people have to know your blog exists to buy from it)
or by selling advertising space using something like google adsense (which basically you put the code on your site and for every 10,000 visitors you get some money)
